Community and Sensory Gardens
This Selby Hands of Hope established project, first began with a small team of volunteer gardeners, looking to support the local community, improve outside space, and find a sense of purpose for themselves.
We have supported the project, and Selby District AVS, Selby Hands of Hope and project participants have worked in partnership with Selby District Council, North Yorkshire County Council, Selby Community Furniture Store and Selby Garden Centre, to make this project the success that it is today.
For the community to enjoy
Volunteers have worked tirelessly to transform a patch of wasteland at the heart of Selby Park into a community garden allotment. Designing, installing and cultivating accessible raised beds, allotment patches and a sensory garden, to be enjoyed by the whole community.
Selby District Council have kindly loaned us the land, and supported the group to improve and develop it. Little pots of funding through the European Social Fund, North Yorkshire County Council and the Two Ridings Foundation, across a number of year, have enabled the project to bloom and the gardeners to offer their support not just in the park, but also at other local school and community gardening projects.
The Handy Gardeners
The team call themselves ‘The Handy Gardeners’ and are now a key member of the Sustainability Partnership. They have already started to develop other green spaces in Selby Town, continuing to work closely with SDC, NYCC, Selby Civic Society, Big Local, Groundworks and Project Wild.
The recent pandemic has shown us just how crucial accessible outdoor space is for the wider community. This project works to support ongoing efforts from both the statutory and voluntary sectors, as well as providing fantastic volunteering opportunities.
