A Resounding Success for ‘Valuing Volunteers’ Awards

There was a fantastic atmosphere with over 85 people including volunteers, voluntary sector organisations and the 7 award sponsors attending.  A light lunch gave the opportunity for our guests to network and visit the impressive range of display stands in attendance. 

Linda Slough (Chief Officer, Selby District AVS) gave the opening speech with the ceremony being officially opened by Nigel Adams MP.

Kathy Donnelly (Volunteer Champion, Selby District Volunteer Centre) spoke about the work the Volunteer Centre had been doing during the last 12 months.  The awards and winners were then announced by Kathy. 

 

The awards, sponsors and winning volunteers were:

  • Trustee /Steering Group Volunteer of the Year was presented by Mary Weastell - Chief Executive, Selby District Council.
    Winner: Barbara Sim - volunteer with Selby District Disability Forum
  • Young Volunteer of the Year was presented by Holly Bainbridge - Manager, Highfield Care Home, Tadcaster.
    Winner: Abi Dack - volunteer with Bee-Able CIC
  • Sports Volunteer of the Year was presented by Paul Hirst - Manager, Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust
    Winner: Tadcaster Swimming Pool Trust Volunteers
  • Caring Volunteer of the Year was presented by Matt Oxtoby - Development Manager,  Cober Hill Hotel Conference and Event Centre, Scarborough.
    Winner: Jenny Moy - volunteer with Peter Pan Nursery Sherburn in Elmet
  • IT Support /Social Media Volunteer of the Year was presented by Sue Mellor - Marketing Manager, ShoPING Ltd.
    Winner: Neil Pollock - volunteer with Selby and District DIAL. (award collected by Joyce Baines-Holgate on Neils behalf).
  • Community Safety Volunteer of the Year was presented by Inspector Michelle Falkingham on behalf of Selby District Community Safety Partnership
    Winner: Julie Pilmoor - volunteer with Safe and Sound Homes.
  • Make a Difference Volunteer of the Year was presented by Mandy Empsom - External Communications Officer, Drax
    Winner: Steven Sweeting – volunteer with Highfield Care Home.

All 19 volunteers nominated for this year’s awards were thanked for their amazing contribution to volunteering activities across the Selby District. 

Many thanks to Julie Shillito who has volunteered with the Volunteer Centre to help us demonstrate the variety of volunteer opportunities available and provide a visual record for the day.  A DVD compiled by Julie of volunteer activity in Selby District isavailable to view through our You Tube channel.
