Have you heard of the Whitley Community Oil Cooperative?

Have you heard of the Whitley Community Oil Cooperative?

"Are you interested in saving money on heating oil?  By pooling our requirements, we believe we can negotiate a lower price for everyone. There are lots of examples on the Internet of other villages who already successfully do this."

Who can join?

Anyone in Whitley, and all the surrounding villages (Womersley, Smeaton, Balne, Cridling Stubbs, Pollington, Eggborough, Haddlesey etc.) and we now have over 150 members.

How does it work?

Every two months the Cooperative Coordinator emails existing members to let them know when the next order will be. Members let the coordinator know how much oil they want — either a fixed number of litres (minimum 500) or “fill-up the tank” (we need an estimate of the likely quantity so we have an idea of the total volume when negotiating with the suppliers).

The coordinator emails round various companies to get the best price based on the total volume. The supplier who gives, the best price gets the order. The oil is delivered on an agreed day or days, and the supplier leaves or sends each member a bill for their own oil. The bill is payable direct to the supplier.

THE COOPERATIVE DOES NOT HANDLE ANY MONEY. Interested, or want more information? Drop an e-mail to John White at whitleyoilcooperative@orangehome.co.uk or call 01977 662917.
