FRIENDSHIP in Selby District

Would you make a great friend?
New Service Launched to create friendships across Selby District.

Funded by the GP Consortium, SHIELD, this new service has been comissioned by the Social Prescribing Service run by Selby District AVS.

Managed by Carers Count, a Friendship Coordinator has been appointed – Danny Fitz George.

Danny explained further, “having friends is one of the best ways to reduce loneliness and has a positive impact on people’s mental and physical health. We will help match patients referred through the Social Prescribing Service and Carers Count with volunteers who are willing to form friendships.”

Through Friendship in Selby District we aim to alleviate loneliness, promote social interaction, independence, health, well-being and confidence. As well as one to one home visits the service will also host group activities.

Volunteers will be matched with individuals based on shared interests, personality and location. Support and training will be provided and appropriate checks carried out.

Dawn Theaker, Manager Carers Count added, “We are delighted about this new opportunity through the Social Prescribing Service, which will transform the quality of life for so many wonderful people in our District.”.

The service already has a list of people requesting a friend – if you would like to find out more about volunteering for the service please contact Danny who is organising an information event.
